Yeonmi Park is the author of the popular book on Amazon In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom. In response to the events detailed in the book, Park has confirmed that she wasn’t familiar with the concept of freedom. She also said that her greatest joy in childhood was having enough food to eat. Yeonmi’s book begins with her narrating her exit from North Korea in 2007 when she was 13 years old. She escaped by crossing the Yalu River, which was frozen, with her mother in the middle of the night. Park and her mom arrived in China, and had to decide what their next steps would be. Her journey to South Korea would take years, and would involved her trek across China, through the Gobi Desert, to the border of Mongolia. Park has to be physically and mentally strong in order to survive such a strenuous journey. She was subject to bodily harm at any moment, since she was traveling outside of the law. Yeonmi also witnessed the perils of suicide and starvation during her journey. Park also shares that her father crossed the border to join her in South Korea. Unfortunately, Park’s father passed away from untreated cancer just months after reuniting with his daughter. In an interview with Reason TV, Yeonmi stated that her father passed away without having experienced real democracy. However, she admits that if she’d had some of the things that Americans discarded, she could have stayed in her homeland. Clearly, the story of Yeonmi Park and her escape from her country in search of a better life has fascinated readers and made her increasingly popular. However, some have discredited Park’s story on Youtube, saying that some parts of her narrative are not accurate. There have even been accusations that Park and her mother were United States agents. Park, however, has made it clear that she knows the truth of oppression in North Korea. She has also made it clear that she doesn’t plan on being silent about it.
